A little more about camp:

Each year over 700 youngsters participate in FCCYD programs designed to help youngsters with diabetes learn to handle their disease by sharing their needs with others who have diabetes and with caring adults.  Camp is staffed by physicians, nurses, nutritionists, teachers, administrators, and, of course counselors.  Counselors include health science students and health professionals, former campers, folks who love camping and helping kids, as well as those who work or study in other fields.  Our camp medical director is happy to write letters of recommendation for our volunteer staff.  Because these letters are based on detailed knowledge of your performance in a challenging situation, the references can carry a great deal of weight with admissions committees and potential employers.  Of the experience at Florida Diabetes Camp, one University of Florida Dean wrote:  "The educational opportunities you and your staff have provided at camp will prove invaluable to their careers ... the experience has served to broaden the view of childhood disease."

How does the process work?

Applications are handled in the order they are received.  Please read the information below and in the brochure carefully.  Volunteers are recruited during the winter and spring for our summer camps.  Programs during the fall and spring are mainly staffed by counselors trained during the summer.

Due to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and Labor Department regulations all staff at diabetes camp programs must be over the age of 18.  There are no exceptions.

Applications must be completed and mailed to the camp office.  When we receive the application we will schedule a personal interview.  We will verify references and perform a background check with law enforcement agencies.  Those applicants selected will take part in a training/orientation session prior to the start of the camp they will be attending.  If you can not print this downloadable form, we will send you an application.  Please send us your name and address by e-mail.  You may also send any questions to this address or call the office at 352.334.1321.
