Letter from the Bear, Fox, and Hare cabins

Dear Mom, Dad, and Grandma:

We like that you take special care of us and let us give our own shots and take our own blood sugars.  We also like that we get to come to camp with you and with our brothers and sisters, and we wish we didn’t have to go home today.

We like that you take special care of us, but we wish you could spend more time with our brothers and sisters, and they do, too.

We really like when you treat us like normal kids, but don’t like it when people treat us different because we have diabetes.  At camp, we learn a lot about nutrition and our whole family benefits because we eat healthy food.

We don’t like it when you won’t give us sweets, but give others candy in front of us.

Sometimes, we get low and are mean to you or our brothers and sisters. We really don’t mean it, we are just low.  We like to sleep in, but have to get up in the morning for shots or to test blood sugars.  And we don’t like getting tested a 2:00 in the morning.

We really like it when we get Halloween candy and you let us trade it in on other cool stuff.  We like getting snacks when we are low, but wish we could eat pizza more than once a month.  And our brothers and sisters wish they could get special snacks sometimes, too.  Believe it or not, needles and prickers and counting carbs is not that bad and please don’t feel sorry for us.  But we really thank you for worrying about us and taking care of us all the time.

Love,

Bears, Foxes, and Hares

p.s. Don’t cry and don’t worry for us too much!
